A poem about the struggle of being misunderstood.


Communities in Schools (CIS) is an organization determined to lower the dropout rate for at-risk youth. When our team visited JL Francis Elementary - we noticed right away our school was faced with a unique challenge. 250 students in the school speak Spanish but there are only two Spanish-speaking teachers in the building. With the Hispanic drop-out rate being the highest in the nation, our team knew we needed to attract Spanish-speaking volunteers to mentor at the school. In response to this challenge, I was inspired to write this piece about the struggle of being misunderstood.
